As electric and hybrid vehicles become more common on UK roads, more drivers are asking: Can you scrap hybrid and EV batteries?
The short answer is yes, but not at your typical scrap yard. Hybrid and electric vehicle batteries require specialist handling and can’t be scrapped in the same way as petrol or diesel engines. At J Davidson Scrap, we don’t currently process EV or hybrid batteries, but we can point you in the right direction.
Why Can’t You Scrap EV Batteries Like Traditional Engines?
Hybrid and electric vehicles are powered by high-voltage battery packs, typically lithium-ion or nickel-metal hydride. These batteries contain valuable materials like lithium, cobalt and nickel, but they also pose safety and environmental risks if not handled correctly.
These aren’t your everyday 12V car batteries. Improper removal, storage or disposal can result in:
- Electrical shock or fire from high-voltage systems
- Toxic chemical leaks
- Environmental damage if materials aren’t correctly recycled
Because of this, EV batteries must be sent to a certified recycling facility equipped to safely dismantle and process them.
Lithium-Ion vs Lead-Acid: What’s the Difference?
Most modern electric and hybrid vehicles use lithium-ion batteries. These are lightweight, long-lasting, and energy-dense, but also more complex to recycle. Specialist recyclers can extract usable metals and repurpose cells, but the process is costly and regulated.
On the other hand, lead-acid batteries (used in conventional vehicles and sometimes as secondary 12V batteries in EVs) are much easier to scrap. These can often be brought to your local scrap yard, like J Davidson, for proper recycling. In fact, over 95% of a lead-acid battery can be recycled.
What Should You Do With an EV or Hybrid Battery?
If your vehicle is ready to be scrapped, here’s what you should do with the battery:
- Don’t attempt to remove it yourself – EV batteries are dangerous if mishandled.
- Contact a specialist – Look for licensed battery recycling facilities or speak to the vehicle manufacturer about take-back schemes.
- Let us handle the rest – At J Davidson, we’ll scrap your vehicle safely and help advise you on where the battery can be sent for responsible disposal.
