Following an investigation into a fire that took place in our yard on Saturday (22nd March) it has been found that the cause may have been a Lithium Battery.

As these type of batteries are becoming increasing popular in many household gadgets and vehicles, we feel that that the awareness of their danger and how they should be disposed of in the correct manner is extremely important.

Lithium Batteries are a non-recyclable item classed as hazardous and should not be placed in your bins at home or be taken to metal recycling centres, similar to ourselves – only lithium battery certified recycling centres can recycle them.

What are Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries are rechargeable or non-rechargeable batteries that use lithium as a key component. They are widely used in various items due to their high energy density, lightweight nature, and long lifespan.

These include:

  • Smartphones & Laptops
  • Electric Vehicles (EVs)
  • Electric Scooters
  • Power Tools

Dangers of Lithium Batteries

Lithium batteries, while efficient and widely used, pose several risks if mishandled, damaged, or improperly charged. The main dangers include fire, explosion, toxic exposure, and environmental concerns.

Fire and Explosion Risks

  • Lithium batteries can overheat and can cause fires or explosions.
  • The liquid electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries is highly flammable and can ignite when exposed to high temperatures.
  • Physical damage can cause internal short circuits, leading to fire or explosion.

Precautions Before Recycling

  • Do NOT throw lithium batteries in any bin or recycling bins – They can cause fires or environmental harm.
  • Store safely – If the battery is damaged, store it in a non-conductive container filled with sand or kitty litter.
